So we recently kicked off our first 2D Art Challenge within our group, to coincide with the sister 3D challenge! As its a new thing for all of us, we decided to hit the ground running with the following subject:
"Imagine that somewhere, in another plausible dimension, the Masters of Art that we have come to celebrate in museums and art books throughout our lives…battle it out one-on-one to put an end to the speculation and finally settle the argument that their art style is the best art style. THIS is why you studied art theory at school! THIS is THE DEADLIEST MASTERS OF ART!"
The artists had to choose a relatively well known artist from the past that they admired and portray them as how they would be in a fighting game, with all the exaggeration, stylization and personality one would expect from any popular beat em up. Was it to be a popular master of art or someone more obscure? Either way, the design they were to create should clearly capture what that artist was about – be it through their weapons, moves, outfit or size and appearance – in as stylish a way as possible.
We had 4 entrants for our debut challenge: each contributing a distinctly different take to a master of art they chose to represent. They are as follows (in order I received):
Philip Dobbs in the blue corner, representing a vibrant Van Gogh. |
Michael Bastiaens in the orange (of course) corner, representing a daunting Da Vinci. |
Lincoln Renall in the green corner, representing a poised Picasso. |
Karl Thiart in the red corner, representing a jaded Jackson Pollock. |
Who was your favourite contender in our Deadliest Masters of Art bout? Drop a comment and give the artists some love, and keep watching this space for the next challenge announcement and more art to visually devour. Our 3D challenge comes to a finish in the early weeks of March!
On another note: this blog is well due for a makeover to something more fitting - just in case you thought we were going to leave it like this!
